Location & Hours

The VITA Site at BYU is located in the Tanner building room 332. We operate on an appointment basis. We are open to the general public February 7th - April 1st at the following times:

Services Provided

We provide free Federal and State tax preparation services for returns with total income under $50,000.

What to Bring

The following is a list of items to bring to the VITA lab so we can prepare your tax return. You may click on a tax form number to see a copy of the form on the IRS website.

• Social Security card (REQUIRED) for you, your spouse, and any dependents
• All tax forms including (but not limited to) the following:
  • All W-2 forms for each employer or job
  • 1098-T (if you paid tuition, provided by your University)
  • If you attended BYU Provo, you can obtain a copy from the My Financial Account link on Route Y
  • All 1099 forms (if you had any):
    • 1099 INT bank interest or dividend (or substitute form)
    • 1099 DIV capital gains or dividend distributions SSA
    • 1099 MISC miscellaneous income (i.e., independent contractors
• Names, social security numbers (SSN) and birth dates for each adult and child. If you were married or divorced during the year and changed your name, you must make the change with Social Security. You may use our information sheet to help compile this information.
• Name, address, and federal identification number or SSN of business or person providing day care services.
• Records of any alimony received or paid (must provide name and SSN of ex-spouse)
• Records of any business or educator expenses you plan on deducting from your income.
• If you have a copy last year's return, please bring it as well.
• If you would like your return automatically deposited into your bank account you should bring a voided check.

Your Visit to the Lab - What to Expect

When you arrive at the lab you will need to check-in. You will sign your return and you will receive an electronic and/or print copy for your records. Your spouse must also sign your completed return if married and/or filing jointly. Your spouse does not need to be present to file or sign. The necessary forms can be taken home and brought back after you and your spouse have signed them. You have 5 business days to return your signed forms. Be aware that your return will not be submitted to the IRS until the signed form is received.

Data Retention Policy

All paper copies of tax forms retained at our site are submitted to the IRS on or before the due date of the return. Electronic tax return information will be retained for subsequent return preparation and compliance with quality assurance procedures. Electronic information retained at our site is encrypted and safeguarded. This information will be properly disposed of when no longer needed and retained no longer than one year from the due date of the return.
